Winter cleaning in Prince George: beating salt, slush and dry air

Northern BC winters are hard on floors, entryways and indoor air. Here is the routine our helpers use from November through March.
From the first freeze in November to the last melt in April, a Prince George home takes a beating at the front door. Road salt, sanding grit and slush travel inside on boots and settle into floor finishes, grout lines and carpet backing. The good news: a small winter-specific routine prevents nearly all of the damage.
Build a real entry system
Most winter damage happens in the first two metres of your home. A single mat is not enough — you need a scrape mat outside, an absorbent mat inside, and a boot tray with a lip that can hold melt water.
- Outside: a coarse rubber scrape mat, shaken out weekly
- Inside: an absorbent runner at least 1.2 m long
- A lipped boot tray with a folded towel underneath
- A small hand brush for knocking snow off cuffs and hems
Neutralize salt before it etches
Road salt is alkaline and it will dull hardwood finishes and haze tile if it sits. Once a week through winter, mop entry areas with a neutral pH cleaner, then follow with a plain water pass to pick up residue. Never use a steam mop on salt-crusted hardwood — the heat drives the mineral deeper into the finish.
Fight the dry-air dust cycle
Forced-air heat plus -25°C outside air means very low indoor humidity. Dust stays airborne longer and lands on everything. Change furnace filters every 60 days in winter instead of 90, run a humidifier to hold 35–40%, and dust with a slightly damp microfibre cloth rather than a dry duster so particles are captured rather than moved.
Don't forget the garage door track and mudroom
The mudroom is the highest-traffic, least-cleaned room in a northern home. Once a month, empty it completely, vacuum the corners, wipe the walls at boot height, and wash the floor with a degreasing cleaner. It takes twenty minutes and it stops the grit from migrating into the rest of the house.
Winter cleaning is really entry management. Control the first two metres of your home and the other 1,800 square feet stay clean on their own.
