Before the first visit

What to do — and what not to do

A short, honest guide so families know exactly how home care works in the home.

Please do

  • Tell us the daily routine — wake times, meals, naps, favourite chair, TV shows
  • Write down medications and where they are kept, so reminders are accurate
  • Leave a spare key, lockbox code or door instructions with us in writing
  • Keep walkways, stairs and the bathroom clear of cords, rugs and clutter
  • Introduce the caregiver in person on the first visit if you can
  • Share what your loved one enjoys — music, cards, gardening, stories, language
  • Tell us immediately about falls, confusion, infections or hospital stays
  • Ask for a care review any time the needs change

Please don't

  • Don't ask a caregiver to give injections, wound care or hand out medication
  • Don't ask for lifts or transfers that need equipment or two trained people
  • Don't ask a caregiver to drive the client in the caregiver's own vehicle
  • Don't leave cash, cards or valuables out for shopping — we use written arrangements
  • Don't ask for pest control, mould removal, ladders or heavy furniture moving
  • Don't hire our caregivers privately outside the agreement — they lose insurance cover
  • Don't expect nursing judgement — for anything clinical we call Northern Health or 911
  • Don't smoke or ask the caregiver to be around unsafe conditions during a visit
Our limits

What we never do

Non-medical means exactly that. If a need crosses this line we will tell you plainly and point you to Northern Health.

  • Medication administration or injections
  • Wound care, catheter or ostomy care
  • Lifts, transfers requiring a mechanical lift, or two-person transfers
  • Nursing assessments, diagnosis or any clinical decision-making
  • Driving a client in the caregiver's own vehicle
