Living with pets without living with pet hair

6 min read · February 8, 2026

Fur, dander, muddy paws and litter dust — the routine that keeps a pet home genuinely clean between visits.

Pet homes aren't dirtier, they're just higher maintenance. The trick is intercepting hair and dander before it reaches soft furnishings and ductwork.

Brush more, vacuum less

Five minutes of brushing outside removes more hair than twenty minutes of vacuuming inside. Do it on the deck, not the entryway, and do it before shedding season peaks in spring and fall.

Beat the paw prints

A shallow tray of lukewarm water and a towel by the door handles slush and mud in seconds. In summer, a mat with a rubber scrape surface catches trail dust before it becomes floor grit.

  • Wash pet bedding weekly on hot with unscented detergent
  • Wipe food and water bowls daily — biofilm builds fast
  • Vacuum litter areas with a hard-floor head, never a beater bar

Odour is a surface problem, not an air problem

Air fresheners mask; enzyme cleaners remove. For accidents on carpet, blot, apply an enzyme cleaner, and let it dwell for ten minutes before blotting again. Never steam a protein stain — heat sets it permanently.

The takeaway

Intercept hair at the source and treat odour at the surface, not in the air.
