What it means to hire a local family business in Prince George

5 min read · September 10, 2025

Where your money goes, why our helpers stay, and how a small northern company competes with national franchises.

The-Helper started with one vacuum, a second-hand caddy and five neighbours who took a chance. Everything we have built since runs on the same principle: pay people properly, show up when you said you would, and stay in the community you serve.

Where the money goes

When you book a national franchise, a percentage of every dollar leaves the region as royalty payments. When you book with us, that same dollar pays wages to people who grocery shop in Prince George, and buys supplies from suppliers here.

Why our helpers stay

Cleaning has notoriously high turnover, which is why so many clients get a different stranger every visit. We pay above the regional average, cover WorkSafeBC, provide all equipment, and build routes so nobody is driving unpaid across the city. Low turnover is why we can promise the same helper.

Accountability you can actually reach

If something goes wrong, you are not filing a ticket with a call centre in another province. You are talking to the family whose name is on the van, and it gets fixed within 48 hours.

The next chapter

We are building a franchise and partnership program specifically so newcomer families can own a Helper territory of their own — with the training, systems and brand support we wish we'd had at the start.

The takeaway

Local money stays local, low turnover means consistency, and accountability has a face and a phone number.
